Live Chat: Stanford MBA Admissions

Stanford Graduate School of Business (Stanford Full-Time MBA Profile) is one of the most selective MBA programs in the world. In 2010, Stanford admitted 6 percent of its 7,204 applicants.Recently, prospective MBA students who covet seats at Stanford and Bloomberg Businessweek reporter Francesca Di Meglio (screen name: FrancescaBW) had their admissions questions answered by Derrick Bolton (screen name: DerrickBolton), assistant dean and director of MBA admissions at Stanford. Here are edited excerpts of their conversation:

Cordova: Can you speak on the reapplicant process? Are reapplicants reviewed separately from all other applicants? Any advice?

DerrickBolton: Reapplicants are reviewed in the context of the new applicant pool. They are not grouped separately or reviewed in a different way from other applicants. In terms of advice, don't view a nonadmission decision as an indication that your application was flawed. That can lead you to make a bunch of changes to essays, references, etc., when in fact, they could have been the strongest aspect of your candidacy.

FrancescaBW: For those interested in information on reapplying to business school, you might find this recent article helpful.

campbec: How will multiple GMAT scores affect admissions? Does Stanford only consider the highest score?

DerrickBolton: You self-report the GMAT score in your application. Most applicants report the highest total score, and we consider that in the review process. Some will report a lower total score if the component—quant or verbal—is more important, given your background and experience.

geraldteo: I submitted an application for the third round of admissions. What advice do you have for the interview, in case I get an invite?

DerrickBolton: Treat the interview like a conversation. We have advice about interviews on our website.

Be sure you've given some thought to your experiences and what you learned from them. And then follow the interviewer's lead. Don't be so wedded to the points that you want to convey that you don't actually answer the questions being asked.

taylorh: How is the third-round application process going? Have interview invitations been released?

DerrickBolton: Well, the third-round application process is not "going" at all this morning, as I'm doing this chat. We're in the process of reviewing applications and that will continue through early May. We've already sent some interview invitations. We'll continue extending invitations until we complete the review of files.

JorgeMazal: How important is international work experience? If two people have the same successes and work experience, but one's experience is international, does it make a difference?

DerrickBolton: No. We don't look at admission this way. Even if the successes and work experience are similar, the means and motivation for achieving that success may differ. We do value a global perspective. But we recognize that international opportunities are not directly within an applicant's control, so it's hard to reward or penalize someone for that.

RAJ23: What is the minimum and average GMAT score acceptable to get admitted to the program?

DerrickBolton: There's no minimum score required for admission. Admitted candidates tend to have performed well in all the areas we consider in evaluation.
